COLLABORATION

Local Tourist — Audience First

No budget. No corporate backing. No familiar playbook. This is where I learned to build audience, drive content, and make real-time marketing decisions when the only resource is judgment.

Project Year :

2012-2017

Role :

Brand & Content Lead

Scope:

Apparel · Video · Brand Creative

Approach:

Cultural Collaboration · Creative Vision

Problem :

This audience could smell a fake from across the room.

Local Tourist Clothing Co. lived at the intersection of Minneapolis and LA hip-hop culture. No corporate backing. No playbook. No budget to buy attention.

And the audience? Culturally fluent and allergic to anything that felt manufactured.

This was never a brand-building exercise. It was audience development and content strategy for a market that only respects one thing: earned relevance. You don't pay your way in here. You prove your way in.

Solution :

So I went where the audience already was. On stage.

Working from the owner's vision, I led brand creative, content, and event marketing across apparel, graphics, and video. Curren$y, Lil Debbie, Paperwater, Pac Div and others wore Local Tourist on stage — from 100-person rooms to halls of 5,000.

I shot the performances. Built the assets. And during a Minneapolis summer concert series, I ran an interview series with the artists that turned into organic brand content across brand-new social platforms. Instagram video was barely a thing yet.

Call it what it was: influencer and content marketing, years before either had a name.

Challenge :

The access was never the hard part. The judgment was.

Knowing which content would land with a culturally specific audience and which would get scrolled past. Reading channel strategy before the algorithms made it obvious. Making creative and distribution calls in real time — no approval chain, no dashboard, no safety net.

That kind of instinct only gets built when the stakes are real and the budget is zero.
It's the same instinct I bring to audience and content decisions at every scale since.

Summary :

This was early-career work. It was also a master class.

Independent brand. Real audience. Real cultural accountability from day one. Before "influencer marketing" was a line item, I was building it from nothing but instinct and a camera.

Audience awareness. Collaborative content. Platform strategy for emerging channels. Those reps show up in every campaign I've run since.

You can teach tactics. You can't teach knowing what's real. This is where I learned the difference.
